shmuFM were last week proud participants in the “Our Earth Week” initiative, which brings together community radio stations around the UK to bring a focus on the climate crisis.
The initiative is in its third year and is delivered by a loose network of organisations under the banner of the Community Radio Environment Network. The week is timed to link in with the international COP events – this year, COP29 taking place in Azerbaijan. There is both a focus on adding pressure to governments to take action at a global level, as well as action and activity that can be inspired at a local level.
The shmuFM schedule had a focus on nature and the environment across the week:
– Features made by community radio partners across the UK, including the “Our Isles” show, shared across the week.
– Cfine included the theme within their regular financial inclusion show
– Seaton Speaks presenters explored the environment in a range of ways, with a particular, local focus.
– We played a two hour special of Paperboats podcasts, which feature interviews with writers with a focus on climate and nature.
– Youth Media had fun, with a focus on birdsong.
We’re currently working towards having a regular hour each week with a focus on the environment, nature and climate change, rotating between different presenters on a monthly basis. If you’re interested in radio training and volunteering, reach us at volunteer@shmu.org.uk
